About Colorado Public Radio

Colorado Public Radio (CPR) is a prominent nonprofit media organization serving Colorado with a mission to inform, inspire, and entertain through meaningful news, music, and cultural programming. Founded in 1970 at the University of Denver as KCFR 90.1 FM, CPR began broadcasting an eclectic mix of news and music, quickly becoming a pioneer in public radio by adopting National Public Radio (NPR) programming like “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition” in the 1970s. In 1984, KCFR became one of the first community-licensed public radio stations in the U.S., marking a significant shift in public media ownership and operation. A major milestone came in 1991 when CPR was officially formed through the merger of KCFR and KPRN in Grand Junction, expanding its reach across Colorado. Over the decades, CPR has grown its network with translators in key cities and launched new services, including the expansion of news and classical music onto dedicated full-time signals in 2001 and the launch of OpenAir (now Indie 102.3) in 2011, which brought independent music to a wider audience. CPR has also invested heavily in digital offerings, newsroom expansion, and podcast development, positioning itself at the forefront of public media innovation. Today, CPR operates multiple radio signals and digital platforms, reaching listeners statewide. In 2020, CPR partnered with Colorado College to operate KRCC, further extending its footprint into Southern Colorado. Known for its commitment to creativity, curiosity, ethics, inclusion, and respect, CPR continues to be a leader in public media, blending traditional broadcasting with modern technology to serve diverse communities. Its evolution reflects a broader trend in media: leveraging technology to expand reach, deepen engagement, and adapt to changing audience needs.
