About Amit Shah

Amit Anilchandra Shah, born on October 22, 1964, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, is a prominent Indian politician and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He hails from a Gujarati family and grew up in Gujarat, where he began his political career through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Shah has been active in politics since the early 1990s, initially serving as National Treasurer of the BJP's youth wing and later holding key positions in Gujarat's BJP unit[1][3][6]. Shah played a vital role in Gujarat state politics, managing important portfolios including Home, Transport, and Prohibition under then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi. He is credited with turning around the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank and enhancing the Gujarat State Financial Corporation's profits. His strategic leadership contributed significantly to BJP's electoral dominance in Gujarat[2][3]. Nationally, Amit Shah rose to prominence as BJP National General Secretary before the 2014 general elections, where he was given charge of Uttar Pradesh, the politically crucial state. Under his stewardship, BJP won 73 of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, a decisive factor in the party’s sweeping victory. Subsequently, he was appointed BJP National President in 2014 at age 49, a record youngest leader in that role, and re-elected in 2016. During his tenure, the BJP expanded its reach across India, winning multiple state elections and the 2019 general election[1][2][4][5]. In 2019, Shah was appointed Union Home Minister, overseeing India’s internal security, law and order, and counter-terrorism policies. His tenure is marked by key initiatives including the abrogation of Article 370, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and reorganized it into two Union Territories, and the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Shah is recognized for his organizational acumen, assertive leadership, and close alliance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi[1][4][6]. Besides politics, Shah has been involved in sports administration, notably with Gujarat’s cricket and chess associations, promoting youth engagement in these sports[2][3]. He remains a central figure in Indian politics as of 2025.
