Karl Racine is a prominent legal figure and public servant who made history as the first elected Attorney General of Washington, D.C.[2] Born in Haiti, he immigrated to the District at age three and was educated in D.C. public schools before attending the University of Virginia School of Law.[6] Racine built a distinguished career spanning both private and public sectors. He began his legal career at Venable LLP in 1989 as a litigation associate, where he eventually became the first African-American managing partner of a top-100 American law firm.[1][2] During his private practice, he led significant litigation work, including defending a Fortune 100 company through five years of litigation in one of the largest certified employment discrimination class actions following the 1991 amendments to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.[3] He also practiced criminal law at Cacheris & Treanor, a prominent Washington criminal defense firm, handling white-collar and civil cases on behalf of senior corporate and government officials.[3] Beyond private practice, Racine served as Associate White House Counsel to President Bill Clinton, where he advised the President and White House staff on civil and criminal investigation matters, including congressional and Justice Department inquiries.[3] He also worked at the D.C. Public Defender Service, representing residents who could not afford legal representation.[2] Sworn in as D.C. Attorney General in 2015, Racine was reelected to a second term in 2018.[2] As AG, he focused on preserving affordable housing, cracking down on slumlords, battling wage theft, protecting consumers, and reforming the juvenile justice system.[1] His office gained national prominence on emerging issues involving artificial intelligence, privacy, competition, and antitrust matters, pursuing cases against companies like Facebook and Amazon.[7] Racine served as president of the bipartisan National Association of Attorneys General and received the Kelley-Wyman Award, the top award given to attorneys general.[1] He currently works at Hogan Lovells, leading litigation and the firm's State Attorneys General practice.[1]
