Hospitalizations have spiked to 9 percent as of late December, putting the state on track to surpass last year's peak of 10.5 percent reached in February.

Vaccination Rates at Critical Low

A significant contributor to the outbreak is the alarmingly low vaccination rate. Only 34 percent of Massachusetts residents have received their flu shot this season, compared to 38.5 percent last year. This decline in protection comes as influenza A spreads rapidly through communities, overwhelming emergency departments with nearly 9,000 visits daily statewide, with approximately one-quarter related to respiratory illness.

Urgent Call for Action

Public health officials emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective prevention strategy. The flu vaccine takes approximately two weeks to provide full protection, making immediate action critical. Vaccines are available at no cost for most residents through pharmacies, health centers, and local boards of health.
