Closing the Global Knowledge Gap on Menopause
The Global Knowledge Gap on Menopause
Menopause affects over one billion women worldwide, yet awareness remains critically low. Only 53% of people globally report being knowledgeable about menopause, with just 66% of women understanding this life stage they will experience. This knowledge deficit creates dangerous consequences for women's health and workplace wellbeing, leaving them unprepared for symptoms ranging from hot flashes to cognitive changes affecting 82% of women.
Healthcare and Support Failures
Healthcare systems are failing menopausal women. Only 54% seek medical help despite over 80% experiencing symptoms, partly because 80% of OB/GYNs lack menopause training. Additionally, just 31% of women feel comfortable discussing menopause at work, and many endure six months of disruptive symptoms before seeking care. This inadequate support undermines women's quality of life and economic productivity.
The Path Forward
Governments and healthcare providers must prioritize menopause education and training. Integrating menopause management into universal health coverage and professional curricula is essential. By 2030, nearly 500 million women aged 45-55 will experience menopause, making urgent action necessary to address this widespread public health challenge.
